PAULETTE ATTIE: GRANDE DAME OF THE AMERICAN SHOWBIZ
By Maximillien de Lafayette

Photo: The stunning diva, author and
award-winning actress and songwriter, Paulette Attie.
But of course, mon cher ami, legends and lovable
mythical images mesmerize us and transport us to enchanted,
unreachable parallel worlds. But just imagine for a short moment,
how you could or would feel, if you manage to touch the glittering
face of a star, chat with intricately mesmerizing songwriter, or
just be part of the intriguing and glamorous universe of a famous
artist. Getting closer to Paulette Attie, is entering that
delightful, mysterious and warm universe of loveable and confusing
cosmos of stars. She did it all. She wrote poems, songs, composed
music, shined on the big screen, produced and hosted enormously
successful radio shows, appeared on the world most prestigious
theaters, taught our children how to write, how to act and how to
love music, and above all, Paulette Attie taught us that the
greatest joy in the world is to find the joy in giving...
I am very fond of Paulette Attie. But, I have to
admit, Paulette intrigues me, challenges me, tries to lecture me all
the time, and puts a tiger in my tank. Part of my fascination with
this splendid Jewish and international diva derives from her most
unusual story-telling talent, abundant knowledge of the world of
entertainment and her life experiences and encounters with legends
and giants in showbiz...and most recently WHAT I HAVE DISCOVERED
ABOUT PAULETTE ATTIE! Ready for this? Fasten your seat belt. One
day, Paulette called me to tell me that she channeled on a higher
level and found out that I was her brother in a previous life. "You
were a naughty boy, Maximillien, a bad, troublemaker child, but
sweet....You gave me hard time...I had to clean up all your acts.
But I loved you...you were fun too, but terrible terrible child..."
told me Paulette Attie. I froze in time and space upon hearing
Nostradramus Paulette Attie. But to certain extent, I believed her.
Paulette has magic, mesmerizing presence and a way with words, words
with substance, warmth and intrigue...I am wondering what else,
Paulette could or would find about my terrible childhood?
A VERY GOOD YEAR FOR DIVA PAULETTE ATTIE
2005 was a
very good year for Paulette Attie. The New York JEWISH POST selected
her as "Star of The Month". And in the Post's annual list of "Most
Outstanding Women of America", Paulette Attie was on the list. World
Art Celebrities Journal in their special edition of the year,
Paulette was nominated "Grande Dame of the American Showbiz".
Paulette made the cover of "STARS ILLUSTRATED", magazine and was
nominated "STAR OF THE YEAR". In the recent edition of "WHO'S WHO OF
THE GREATEST AMERICAN FEMALE SINGERS", Paulette Attie occupied a
place of honor. In Paris, "La Femme Magazine" chose Attie "Artiste
Extraordinaire of the Year". So, this nymph is still making noise
and a big buzz!

Pons and Carmen Miranda. I daresay millions would adore her." "The
classiest singer around today" is how Marjorie Gunner described her
in The New York Voice, and Howard Thompson at The
New York Times said Paulette is "Beautiful, animated, plaintive,
and intense." Her acclaimed one-woman show, About Time opened
off-Broadway in 1997: "Her voice has size and power and her comic
timing is in good shape"...The New York Times. "Rush to see About
Time, where Paulette Attie personifies grace and talent"...
Aisle Say. "Astounding talent"...The Village Voice. About Time
continues to be a favorite with audiences.
On
her award winning weekly radio show, Paulette Attie's Musical
Playbill (WNYC for 2 years), Paulette sang songs by America's
best loved songwriters, often accompanied by the composers
themselves. Her legendary list of guests includes Harold Arlen,
Jerry Bock, Cy Coleman, "Yip" Harburg, Sheldon Harnick, Burton Lane,
Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, Jimmy Mc Hugh, Mary Rodgers, Harold
Rome, Charles Strouse and Jule Styne. She includes many of their

Broadway, and Show Stoppers. She became friends with some
of these writers and shares stories about their friendship in her
shows. Of Johnny Mercer she said, "If there ever was a person who
could charm the birds out of the trees, it was Johnny." She has sung
in Washington D.C. for Presidents and Heads of State, including
being chosen in 1998 to sing in Washington for the 50th Anniversary
Celebration of the Statehood of Israel. In 1988, she became the
first woman performer elected into the Friars Club. The Award
winning singer/actress and poet just received the 2004 ASCAP Plus
Songwriter Award. This makes it her fifth year in a row.
Presi dent
Bush sent Paulette a letter of congratulations for her song
“United
Are We"
and
for donating her time to work with the children at PS 1, the school
nearest Ground Zero that was still operating after 9/11. She was
invited to sing "United Are We" at PS 1 on the six month anniversary
of 9/11, where fifty 7 and 8 year olds joined her. The performance
was seen several times on NY1 TV. On September 11, 2002 the entire
student body of 650 children at PS 1 sang “United Are We” with
Paulette honoring the one year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.
ATTIE, THE EDUCATOR:
In addition to major productions and plays she took part or starred
in, and between writing books and essays, Paulette Attie devotes a
great deal of her time to education. She has taught and lectured in
colleges and institutions, presenting interactive programs of songs
and poems, to both educate and entertain. She is highly admired for
her original children’s show Time for a Rhyme, which includes
songs and poems she has written, along with those of Langston
Hughes, Irving Berlin, William Shakespeare, and Nikki Giovanni.
ATTIE: THE LOVING AND CARING HUMAN BEING AND GUIDING LIGHT:
“To make a difference in the world is probably the most evolved
example of success,” Paulette told me. “I consciously try to apply
this principle every day. Even the smallest gesture, like smiling at
someone, or exhibiting compassion to another can make a
difference.” I recently received a letter of thanks from someone
I'd helped some twenty-five years ago. I'd long since forgotten the
deed, but she hadn't.
SOON AFTER WE PUBLISHED THE ARTICLE ON PAULETTE ATTIE, WE RECEIVED
THIS "Note from Paulette: THANK YOU Maximillien, for your
article, your kind words, and for making me laugh. Laugh??? Yes, a
long, loud, laugh. When I shared the information with you about
our previous life together, I asked you not to share it with
anyone. You said, “I understand. Yes, I do!” Now that the whole
world is privy to that knowledge, here’s the main thing I found
out about you: It was in an era when women were not given higher
education, and you kindly shared your knowledge with me. You were
very GENEROUS. I know it’s more intriguing to be perceived as
“naughty” and “terrible,” so I allow for that fact that you were
indeed naughty. How you were naughty, we’ll leave to the
imagination of the readers. If you want a writer to say something
about you, tell him not to share that information with anyone.
Naughty you were and are, and GENEROUS you continue to be. "
